  • Some of My Favorite Local Comedians

I have had the great pleasure of working with some great comics and entertainers here in New Orleans. New Orleans is a great city and surrounded by very talented people. From the five-year-old “Coke Bottle Tap Dancers” in the French Quarter, to Grammy award winning jazz musician Allen Toussaint, in my mind, New Orleans is the Entertainer’s Capital of the World!

  • On The Road

I have been traveling all over the country, from Vegas to Florida. It has been an amazing ride! I initially cut my teeth at the Funny Bone in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but it wasn’t until Hurricane Katrina that I began to understand a little more about the “science” behind the performer. I always thought I was pretty good, but in this business, pretty good isn’t good enough.

RedBean Head Shot

I was hanging out with Eddie Francis, a DJ at a local radio station here in New Orleans, when he was hosting a fashion show at a restaurant in New Orleans. I think it was The Fashion Cafe. Around the same time, he and Rose Bratcher were setting up an improv comedy troupe and invited me to join. It was great! One night, we were scheduled to do a show at True Brew, and the comedy show was lacking a few comedians to do stand-up.

The host of the show, Dr. Ken Jeong, asked me if I had done stand-up before. I said, No, but I am sure I can do something.

There, in True Brew, the birth of Big Nasty–my first stage name. After a few shows, I started to think about the name. I thought, what would happen when I finally got the chance to debut on Jay Leno or Letterman.

The announcer: “Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing Big Nasty!” NOT!

No matter how funny I might be, that name was not going to work. I began to think back when I was in college at Tulane University and a bouncer at local bars, the Boot and the Metro. There was this underaged girl who always tried to sneak in. In her effort to provoke me, she would call me Red Bean. “You look like a Red Bean!”

Hmmm, I thought, I am from New Orleans. That should be my name. I decided to spell as one word, capital R, capital B–RedBean.

Nearly a decade has passed since I first stepped on stage, now I have a large amount of credits under my belt: Comic View, The Asshole Monologues, The Galitoires Monologues, Let The Brotha Talk, I Love My Kids…But and numerous plays and stand-up performances.

Look out world RedBean is on the loose!
